Mission - For God's Glory

Commitment to Mission

2 Corinthians 4:15 - For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

What motivates you to be missional? Maybe it's guilt (I hope not!)? Maybe compassion? Or something else? Many things motivate a person to spread the gospel. But the motivation of Paul (and others) was primarily the glory of God.

Glory is a hard concept to grasp. We may think of vague images of victory or brightness but it's more than that. Biblical glory has a meaning of weight, importance, deference and heaviness. But also respect, honour and majesty.

Have you ever looked at a sunset and thought... Wow, that's amazing! It's big, weighty and beautiful! You take notice of it! Or seen an eagle in flight ... It's breathtaking and majestic. Both are glorious sights! No wonder the bible says:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” - Isaiah 6:3

These, however, are dimmer radiances of God's glory in comparison to his Son, Jesus Christ who is:

the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature - Hebrews 1:3a

In Jesus, we see God's aseity, eternality, goodness, graciousness, holiness, immutability, mystery, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience, unity, providence, righteousness, sovereignty, transcendence, veracity and love! Lot's of words there that describe some of Gods weightiness, importance and beauty. His glory!

The radiance of God's glory shines brightly each time someone turns from sin to Jesus Christ for forgiveness. The best motivation for mission? The glory of God!

Prayer: Father, we have a ministry by your mercy to reach people with the gospel. Please Lord, drive us from a deep motivation of doing everything to your glory. Amen.
