Church - The Mission
Commitment to Church
Acts 1:6 - "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?"
The disciples spent three years with Jesus but still did not fully understand the true purpose of his mission. Jesus did not come 2000 years ago to restore the earthly kingdom of Israel as the disciples had hoped.
After the Lord's ascension, his followers may have been tempted to become political activists, trying to rebuild the earthly kingdom of Israel. Jesus instead told them that they would travel beyond the borders of Israel and be his witnesses. Not his politicians, not his social warriors but his witnesses.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8
Christians have a primary mission... It's to tell people about the life-changing mercy of Jesus Christ. Sure there are side-effects to being a Christian witness. People who have fallen victim to social and political injustice have their felt (immediate) needs met, but this is a by-product, not a prime-product. We are not here to build an earthly kingdom focused on a human definition of peace, justice and equality. We are here to proclaim Christ!
Sin is the root cause of all social and political injustice. The only way to solve the issues of this world is for sin to be removed. For people to trust in Jesus as the Holy Spirit sanctifies them, now that would change everything! The message of salvation in Jesus spread by us the church is the only place the root issue of sin can be tackled.
The mission of the church... Tell people about Jesus!
